Derbyshire Churches and Chapels
PREFACE
The inspiration for this handbook has been a similar work of reference published annually by the Scotland's Churches Scheme. It is hoped that, far from being just another guide-book, it will go some way towards encouraging tourists and others to visit a particular church or chapel and thereby experience something of the actual living, worshipping, out-going community in that place - something that may be achieved by such means as well-presented displays, photographs of parish personalities and events, up-to-date notice boards, bookstalls, children's information, welcoming guides, pastoral assistance, as well as just the opportunity for some peace and quiet. Some churches understandably do not feel able to leave the building open and unattended as a normal rule, though are prepared to have somebody on duty for a limited period - even just an hour or so a week is worth doing. In other instances the regular coffee morning or annual flower festival may be an ideal opportunity to open up. Failing any of these an approved contact number or address will suffice to be included under our general umbrella of "willingness to open".
Some churches have unfortunately failed to respond in time for publication. Non-inclusion does not necessarily" indicate therefore that a church is not open to the public on any weekdays. All information has been supplied with the good-will and co-operation of the individual ministers and officers; it is reproduced here in good faith as being accurate at the time of writing. Circumstances change, however, and it is inevitable that some information may become obsolete: we can only apologise for the occasional disappointment that may arise and hope that we will get it right next time. It is fully our intention to up-date the handbook at reasonable intervals and requests for inclusion or amendment will be welcomed by the author or publisher.
