LISTED BUILDING GRADES

Most churches and many chapels are now "listed" as being of architectural interest and are therefore subject to more stringent planning regulations. The older system (still in use in many urban areas) was to award religious buildings with Grades A, B or C; the newer, general system is to give Grades I, II* or II. To avoid invidious comparisons of grading only the prestigious "A" or "I" grades are indicated in the text.
